Romanian universities, diploma-making factories

The last report from the Romanian Agency for Higher Education Quality (ARACIS) shows worrying results for the academic education. Corruption, the low level of education and lower attraction rates for foreign students are some of the bad qualities that are underlined in the report. According to the study conducted on a sample of students from both state and private universities, corruption is one of the main reasons that lead to lower standards of education in private universities. However, 60 per cent of the interviewees consider the public schools as well are subject to higher ranks corruption.

One of the sad conclusions of the study is that universities tend to become diploma- making factories, while performance and individual skills are less and less developed.

The ARACIS study was also done on a sample of university teachers, who, however consider the schools they work for are education leaders and create competence and skill- driven candidates, which comes in sheer contradiction with most of the employers who are looking for young brains and work force, who, interviewed in their turn, have said today’s graduate lack any professional skills.

In support of this report comes the EDU CER educational association, who considers there are also other indicators that should be taken into consideration. One has to do with the fact that very few of the young people actually get to work in their study area, after graduating, a fact which is mainly due to the huge offer of university places.

“If we are taking into consideration that only 20 percent of the graduates actually find a job, this says a lot about both state and private universities’ performances, “ says Stefan Vlaston, head of EDU CER for Romania Libera daily.
