Starting this year, the electricity networks in Muntenia Sud area, namely those in Giurgiu and Ilfov counties along with Bucharest, will be subject to an ample investment and modernization program, according to representatives of Enel Distributie Muntenia.
The objective of such a plan is to improve the quality of the electricity distribution service, by reducing the number and duration of breakdowns which affect an important number of consumers.
Up to now, the old network and obsolete equipments have caused serious problems for the electricity distribution service, acknowledge the Enel officials.
Enel’s officials mention that wonders are not possible over night, especially taking into consideration that in 2008, the year when Enel took over the energy distribution and supply in Muntenia Sud, the electric networks were obsolete, more than 30 year old, with depreciated and out of date equipments and materials. In order to succeed in reaching European quality standards, the network needs a complex and long term investment process, in which Enel’s international expertise, advanced technology and financial resources will be used. This is the reason a few years are needed in order to finish this process.
A special case is Giurgiu County. Here, the network condition, physically obsolete and morally outdated, is influenced by specific problems common to other areas in Munteania Sud as well. These problems are: illegal connections to the network, energy thefts and unauthorized interventions. Also, in many areas under development, owners prefer to require less power then they really need, which leads to an incorrect projection of the network. Without valid information coming from the clients with regard to changes in consumption habits, the distributor cannot assure the quality of energy at the level clients ask for.
Investments work in Giurgiu have already started, and only in 2009 Enel invested over 13 million RON in modernization works meaning replacing and rebuilding the components of electric network responsible to assure the energy distribution in good conditions.
These investment works will continue in 2010 in this county, and among major projects the first is Telecontrol which will allow a 10 times decrease of the time for reconnection to the network in case of damages, and also the rehabilitation of medium voltage aerial networks as well as the replacement of isolation and obsolete cables in view of reducing the number of disconnections. Among important investments is to be mentioned the introduction of all transformation stations in the county as part of a huge modernization project. The same thing will happen to the substations. The low voltage networks, in the areas where problems and disorders appeared frequently, will also be rehabilitated.
The investment plan of Enel is ambitious, but once implemented, it will allow electric network in Muntenia Sud to reach the level of quality standards present in the other countries like Italy, France or Sweden.
