Australian Open: Monica Niculescu in last-16 stage

Monica Niculescu (Romania)/Chan Yung-Jan (Taiwan) qualified for the last-16 stage of the women’s doubles tournament at the Australian Open after defeating Russia’s Ala Kudriavteva/Ekaterina Makarova (top seed 11), score 6-4, 6-4. In the third round Niculescu/Yung-Jan will play against Lisa Raymond (US)/Rennae Stubbs (Australia) (top seed 6). Raymond/Stubbs defeated Julie Coin (France)/Marie-Eve Pelletier (Canada) in the second round, score 6-2, 7-5.

On the other hand, Horia Tecau (Romania)/Lucas Arnold Ker (Argentina) was defeated by Lukas Dlouhy (Czech Republic)/Leander Paes (India), the top seed number 3 pair, in the second round of the men’s doubles tournament. Tecau and Ker clearly lost at the end of a game dominated by Lukas and Leander, score 5-7, 3-6. Monica Niculescu/Julian Knowle was defeated by Flavia Pennetta (Italy)/Marcelo Melo (Brazil) in the mixed doubles tournament. Niculescu/Knowle lost the game in only two sets, score 4-6, 3-6.
