Basescu: Simplifying the fiscal system does not mean easing taxation

President Traian Basescu recently told a meeting with German investors that taxation will neither decrease, nor increase in Romania, as simplifying the fiscal regime is different from lowering it, Mediafax reports. “I know you need a simplification of the fiscal regime, I agree that we all need this simplification. On the other hand, I would like to make it very clear that we do not fall into the trap of misunderstanding that simplifying the fiscal regime means lowering taxation in Romania,” Traian Basescu stated. According to the president, Romania has one of the lowest tax regimes in the European Union, and the state needs money for sectors like Health, Education, Defence or Public Order. “I made a comparison between taxation in Romania and in other countries of the EU, and I can tell you that the tax level will not decrease. One of the big goals of negotiations with the IMF was precisely to keep single tax and VAT at their previous levels. In this respect, I can assure you there will be complete stability in the future,” the president added.
