Gov’t asks industrial sector to cut gas consumption

According to official sources, the Government has asked the large industrial consumers, mainly those in the chemical and steel industries, to reduce their natural gas consumption during this period in order to avoid the hiking of expensive natural gas imports. At the same time the Government has asked the thermal power plants to use more crude oil. According to those sources, the current consumption of natural gas stands at 83 million cubic meters per day, but only slightly more than 60 million cubic meters per day can be obtained from internal production and from imports. Talks on the issue of reducing the consumption of natural gas have already taken place between Economy Ministry officials and Premier Emil Boc, the sources added.

In other developments, the Government plans to eliminate the mandatory mortgaging of buildings consolidated in order to withstand earthquakes, a measure through which the state wants to make sure that the owners will reimburse its investment, and to stop asking them to pay back the money spent by the authorities. The new measures are meant to speed-up the consolidation works. According to the current law, the consolidation works on buildings owned by physical persons are fully financed from the budget, with the owners being forced to pay the value of the works in monthly installments scheduled for a period of 25 years, without interest.
