Iconic theatre director Horea Popescu dies

Aged 85, theatre and film director Horea Popescu died on Sunday morning, reads a press release from the National Theatre, the institution Popescu lead as artistic director for 20 years. ‘Over the past years, his health condition kept him away from the stage, and he retired in the most discreet manner, without letting theatre off his sight. The National Theatre colleagues who had him by their side along 20 years will dearly miss him. Horea Popescu, theatre director with a vast cultural range the most refined artistic taste died as a champion of theatre, as one of the artisans of the monumental stage installments, a vertical and civic-prone artist of generosity and freedom,” the press release reads. Among his best theatrical production one must note “Death of an Artist” by Horia Lovinescu, ‘Danton’ by Camil Petrescu, ‘Caligula’ by A. Camus, or ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.’ Popescu also tried his hand in theatre, some of his notable productions are “Three Times Bucharest,” The Wasp Nest,” and “Death of an Artist.”
