Rosia Montana has caused a row in Brussels. MEP Renate Weber claims that Adina Valean, her fellow Liberal MEP, has organized along with Canada’s Gabriel Resources a seminar concerning the Rosia Montana Gold Corporation (RMGC) without inviting any of the project’s opponents, Realitatea.net informs. Weber claims that she attended the debate but was not allowed to state her opinion although she had made a request and there were another 20 minutes to go before the end of the seminar. Likewise, MEP Laszlo Tokes, who pointed out that he was not invited to the event, underlined that in his opinion the seminar has nothing to do with mining, being in fact an act of lobbying made by RMGC, Agerpres informs.
Adina Valean said that the debate was aimed to present the industry’s point of view. “The fact that Rosia Montana is a case study might be considered a positive thing”, she added. Valean stressed the debate was not meant to be “emotional”. Daciana Sarbu, member of the European Parliament’s environment commission, stated that a fair public debate on the situation in Rosia Montana is needed.
