Romanians bought 383 million painkilling pills last year

In 2009 the Romanians bought painkillers worth approximately EUR 37 M, according to a survey quoted by ‘Gandul’ daily. According to the data offered by Cegedim, an independent international survey company that focuses on the pharmaceutical industry, Algocalmin is the best-sold drug in Romania with 190 million pills sold over the counter and 29 million pills sold based on prescriptions. Nurofen is next with 108 million pills sold, while Paracetamol is third with 56 million pills sold.

Ion Fulga, Professor Doctor at the Pharmacology Faculty within the ‘Carold Davila’ Medical University, states that a substance contained by some of these drugs causes a serious illness that leads to the destruction of the bone marrow. Metamizole sodium was banned in several countries decades ago.

In the table of the type of drugs best-sold in Romania the painkillers were followed by antibiotic drugs and by drugs against hypertension. Although this kind of drugs are not over the counter drugs, the impressive quantities sold perfectly back the studies conducted by international companies in Romania, studies according to which 75 per cent of Romanians prefer self medication over medical consultations.
