Roma ethnics ask for FM Baconschi’s resignation

Several hundred representatives of Roma organizations protested yesterday in Victoriei Square, demanding resignation of Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi whom they accuse of racism, following a series of recent statements he has made in public. Protesters brought numerous placards condemning racism and also the Minister’s attitude. One of the placards read: ‘Roma ethnics wrote: arrest us! We are Roma, hence we are criminals!’ David Marc, executive director of the Roma Civic Alliance, said the 16 organizations within the alliance did not attend the talks with Baconshi. In their opinion, such formal talks have happened before with little or no results. They say they want their right to dignity respected and the only solution implied was the minister’s resignation.

Roma ethnics were upset by a statement Teodor Baconschi made during his meeting with Pierre Lellouche, French Secretary of State for European Affairs, on February 11, 2010. According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, when talking about the Romanian community in France, Baconschi said: ‘We have some physiological crime problems at the heart of some of the Romanian communities, particularly among the Roma ethnics.”
