Soccer, League 1 – Dinamo, closer to taking lead

Dinamo Bucharest managed to win its away match against International Curtea de Arges, 3-1, in a League 1, leg 19 game, landing only four points behind the top team in the standings.

Andrei Cristea scored two goals for the Bucharest team, in a match where referees’ decisions took centre stage and the Arges team posed some serious problems to Dinamo’s defence. International opened the score in the 30th minute, when Daniel Stan sent a right wing high ball into the box, where Apostu sent the ball straight into the net. Cristea missed out on a huge scoring opportunity in the 53rd minute: the former Steaua player cruised past Pintilii, dribbled Marius Popa, yet his shot went over the crossbar. Four minutes later, he made sure not to miss the ‘target’ again, and the score got to 1-1. Dinamo stroke again in the 68th minute, when Alexe took advantage of a hole in Arges defence. Six minutes on, Dinamo scored yet again, thanks to Nicolae, bringing the score to 3-1.

Craiova ‘gassed’ at Severin

Universitatea Craiova is struggling to stay afloat while among the bottom three, having suffered a ‘blistering’ defeat in League 1 leg 19, at the hands of Gaz Metan Medias, 1-2, in Drobeta Turnu Severin. “U” was down 1-0 as early as eight minutes into the game, but Craiova’s Florin Costea was unable to capitalise on scoring from a penalty shot. It was only towards the end of the match that they scored their one and only point.

In another key encounter this leg, FC Timisoara won their home game against Poli Iasi, 2-1. Dorin Goga scored the second goal with a fantastic shot from outside the 16-metre box, five minutes into extra time. However, Poli fans kept asking for the team’s coach, Nelu Sabau, to step down, as they voiced their discontent with how the team has played lately.

Gloria Bitrita won their away game at Alba Iulia, against local Unirea, 2-1, a golden victory in their bid to avoid relegation. Unirea’s Veljovic scored the first goal two minutes into the first half, but Moraes and Coroian, in the fifth and 80th minutes respectively, turned the tide in Gloria’s favor.

Elsewhere: Ceahlaul Piatra Neamt – Otelul Galati 0-1, FC Vaslui – Pandurii 2-1; Astra Arad – FC Brasov 2-1. The following matches were played Sunday: Rapid Bucharest – Unirea Urziceni and CFR Cluj – Steaua Bucharest.
