PDL files Senate Speaker sacking request

Democrat Liberals yesterday filed a request to have Social-Democrat Mircea Geoana dismissed as Senate Speaker. The request was signed by 57 Senators, including seven independents and two members of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania, the head of PDL’s group in the Senate, Constantin Igas, said. The move came as on Wednesday, Igas said PDL would start procedures to suspend Geoana from his duties because the Senate Speaker refused to hold a vote on independent lawmaker’s request to be allowed to keep committee seats. Igas added that Democrat Liberals would in fact want Geoana dismissed from his position.

According to press reports yesterday, PDL is eyeing Transport Minister Radu Berceanu or PDL Senator Anca Boagiu as possible replacements. Dismissing the Speaker however would prove a difficult task as under current Senate rules, he can only be replaced if this political group wants him to or if he blatantly violates the chamber’s rules and the Constitution. In response to PDL’s request, PSD MPs said yesterday they would ask Senate’s Permanent Bureau to discuss changes to the chamber’s rules on speaker dismissal procedures.
