Gov’t, Bechtel agree deal on 20 km works

Government and Bechtel will sign an agreement for the continuation of Transilvania expressway works in April, with the payment of another tranche of the debt to the company, Mediafax informs. The Romanian party estimated that around 20 km will be finalized in 2010, and two thirds of the constructor’s employees will be maintained.

PM Emil Boc had yesterday a meeting with the representatives of the American company Bechtel, the constructor of Brasov-Bors expressway, called “Transilvania Expressway,” the latter wishing to learn if the Executive is willing to continue the construction of the expressway this year. At the end of the discussion, Premier announced that Government, through the Transport Ministry, and Bechtel company will sign a protocol for the continuation of the construction in April, the month when a new tranche of the debt to the constructor for the works performed so far will be paid. The works will be financed through credit commitment established subject to the volume of the works and paid after execution.

The Government estimates that the construction of around 20 km of Transilvania Expressway will be completed this year. Bechtel inaugurated on December 1 the first 42 km of Transilvania expressway, representing segment 2B Turda-Gilau. Transport minister Radu Berceanu announced in December that the Government had a debt of around EUR 100 M to Bechtel, the overdue amounts having to be paid in January 2010.
