League I: Steaua and Unirea closing in on League leaders

Steaua Bucharest has managed to snatch a point from its away game against title holders Unirea Urziceni after Kapetanos scored the equalizer in the 92nd minute (final score 2-2). Twice betrayed by a frail defence, Steaua secured a draw with difficulty despite having more important goal scoring chances. Unirea Urziceni risked everything just as it did in European competitions and took full advantage of the errors made by Steaua’s Jelev and Tudose. Unirea and Steaua wanted to take advantage of the fact that CFR Cluj had stumbled in its away game against Galati (final score 0-1) and to close in on the League leaders. CFR Cluj continues to top League I standings but Steaua and Unirea have closed in and are now only two points behind it.

After the game, Steaua head coach Mihai Stoichita said that for him “the title remains up for grabs for any of the top eight teams,” Steaua club’s website reports. “If you’re a fan, these kinds of games are thrilling, however if you’re head coach you have to take sedatives. We’ve missed a lot of chances. It seems we were lucky in the first minute of the game but from then on we had bad luck. I don’t think we have a weak championship. The quality of the pitch hindered us a lot but the title remains up for grabs for any of the top eight teams. Kapetanos and Toja had clearer chances but were unable to score from one-on-one situations,” Stoichita said.

League leaders CFR Cluj were silenced by their former head coach Dorinel Munteanu, whose Otelul managed to win a game in which it managed very well a one-goal lead it took after Neague scored in the 37th minute. The team coached by Italy’s Mandorlini was apathetic and finished the game one man down after Gabi Muresan saw the red card in the 84th minute. CFR Cluj started the game as the favorite team but on the pitch it found itself unable to resist a highly ambitious host team that fought for each ball and knew how to perfectly manage the advantage it took after Neague’s goal. In other fixtures on Sunday, Poli Iasi won its home-side game against Unirea Alba Iulia (1-0) while Gaz Metan Medias drew against International Curtea de Arges (0-0).
