Pensioners detained on account of a piece of land

A septuagenarian couple, brother and sister from Suceava County were seized from the middle of the street and thrown in jail for one year, on account of an older land-property issue, ‘Romania Libera’ reports. Lucretia Leizeriuc, 76, and Petru Iacob, 72, were sentenced by a Botosani court to 12 months jail time, for refusing to abide by a judge rule. According to the court decision, the two were supposed to give up a 1,800 meter piece of land to one of their property neighbors.

“Several years ago, our families made a land exchange in this area, and for their conceded piece we have over the years obtained our necessary paperwork,” Petru Iacob says, who claims the plaintiffs have illegal claims based on forged papers over the land.

The two brothers in 2007 were fined for disrespecting court rule, now they are paying with their freedom. Both Iacob and Leizeriuc are sick, the old man has arthritis and is permanently under medical observation. According to the Police, the two pensioners’ detainment came as result of court order. However, Botosani Jailhouse manager Cristina Livadaru says the case will be proposed for parole hearing very soon.
