Bechtel unionists want layoff decision canceled

Bechtel union yesterday filed a request with the County Employment Agency (AJOFM) and Cluj Labour Inspectorate (ITM), to cancel in court a company decision to lay off over 1,900 people from Transylvania Expressway site, Mediafax reports. Union leader Mihai Lup said yesterday that unionists will wait for an answer from the two institutions until the end of the week, and then will decide what action to take.

Lup said all the 1,915 employees are necessary for the 20 km of expressway that are to be built this year. If layoffs go ahead, the company will have to resort to subcontractors or bring in Turkish workers, he said. ITM Cluj director Emilian Rosca also said the collective lay off demanded by Bechtel can be cancelled only in court. On Monday, AJOFM Cluj received a notice from Bechtel about the over 1,900 layoffs from the Transylvania Highway construction site, starting in April. AJOFM however warned the company that it has not observed legal collective layoff procedures.

AJOFM Cluj director Daniel Don voiced hope that layoffs will not take place, considering that Bechtel only exerts “pressures” in order to recoup overdue amounts that it has to cash from the Romanian state for Transylvania Expressway construction.
