Elena Basescu addresses EP on Roma and ballistic missile defence

MEP Elena Basescu has held new speeches in the European fore addressing issues such as the need to have a European Roma strategy, but also discussing the issue of ballistic missile defence in Europe. ‘Being one of the biggest, as well as most vulnerable minorities in Europe, Roma must become an even more active topic on the European agenda. Unemployment, poverty, abuse, discrimination and, last but not least, access to education are as many issues the Roma ethnic minority are confronted with’, Elena Basescu said in her speech delivered at the European Parliament.

In another recent intervention in Parliament, Elena Basescu chose to speak about the trust the US shoed to Romania by including it in the US ballistic missile defence system in Europe. The programme should be also put on the EP agenda – says Elena Basescu – mentioning that it was not directed against Russia.

Ever since the beginning of her MEP’s term, Elena Basescu has taken the floor 20 times in plenary sittings of the European Parliament. The topics she addressed were some of the most important: energy infrastructure investment in the European Communities or administrative co-operation on fiscal matters.

EP sources say the other PDL MEPs regularly renounce speaking in order to give Elena Basescu a high profile and that PDL leaders pull strings with the heads of the European People’s Party in order to nominate her to address plenum. The purpose seems to be to obtain a high activity score as a MEP ‘Jurnalul National’ informed yesterday.
