Liberals from Bucharest Distict 2 party branch next week will address two requests to PNL leadership for Viorel Catarama’s exclusion, daily ‘Gandul’ yesterday wrote. ‘Those are old requests, they’ve occurred before the congress. We have not subjected them to vote to avoid all possible interpretation, as Mr. Catarama was a candidate for PNL president’, District 2 head Dragos Dinca told the newspaper.
Dinca added that, personally, he didn’t think there were reasons to expel Catarama from the party. ‘Anyway, at the end of August 2009, we had another motion to expel Mr. Catarama and the organisation Bureau declined it with five votes ‘opposed’ and four ‘in favour’. It’s unreasonable to bring it up again, but the decision is not mine’, Dinca said. He also rejected allegations by PNL President Crin Antonescu suggesting his group was poorly organized because Catarama should have been excluded a long time before. During the PNL extraordinary congress meeting, Antonescu stated that a well-organised party would have expelled Catarama who, ‘out of negligence’, was still a member of PNL after ‘conducting himself in the most despicable fashion in the election campaign’ for 2009’s presidential race, when he said the Liberals didn’t stand a chance.
Catarama wanted to join the internal electoral race in PNL targeting the president’s office, but ended up not running after all. He suggested Antonescu would like to change Statutes just to silence critical voices, at the pressure of sponsors who were reading paying up the party’s EUR 1.6 M campaign debt.
