Nastase says Basescu could be replaced

Ruling Democrat Liberal’s move to have Senate Speaker Mircea Geoana ousted as soon as possible is fueling speculation that Traian Basescu could be replaced as head of state. Ex PM and PSD leading member Adrian Nastase told Antena 3 on Saturday that press speculations that Basescu might be replaced could have a grain of truth. “I personally did not believe this. But the rapidity with which the action to revoke Mircea Geoana started makes me think there is some true to this,” Nastase said.

In the last few weeks, speculation that Basescu might be suffering from severe health problems increased in the media and on various blogs.

PSD Buzau leader Ion Vasile said on Friday that the haste with which the Democrat-Liberals are trying to revoke Social Democrat Geoana is giving birth to certain speculations, one of them being their desire to impose “an authoritarian system.”

From the Democrat-Liberal camp, PDL Vice President Ioan Oltean accused Geoana of “clutching to his office” and insisted that the Social Democrat will be sacked later this week. Last week PDL did not succeed in introducing their request to oust Geoana as Senate Speaker on Parliament’s agenda.
