Patriciu, Herta Muller, revolutionary Maries awarded by Societatea Timisoara

The Societatea Timisoara Awards were held at the Timisoara National Theatre Saturday, awarding honors to businessman Dinu Patriciu <’The Hammer and Sickle Award’>, writer Herta Muller and Revolution veteran Teodor Maries <’The Hope Award’>.

The president of the Timisoara Society, Florian Mihalcea, said association members decided to give Patriciu the prize for being ‘one of the main hurdles to a coalescing of ’right wing forces. The Societatea Timisoara Awards have been handed out each year since 1992. Among the ‘Hammer and Sickle’ awardees over the 18th editions so far, Ion Iliescu, Adrian Nastase and Bogdan Olteanu.

Societatea Timisoara was founded in January 1990 by a group of Timisoara writers, journalists, doctors, engineers and academe. The most important document drafted by the association was the Proclamation of Timisoara, which demanded, among others, that no member of the PCR or Securitate nomenclature shall be allowed to hold any public office for ten years, or three consecutive legislatures.
