Ambassador: Ukraine cannot ignore Romania’s missile shield decision

Ukrainian Ambassador to Romania Markiyan Kulyk said in an interview for Mediafax that Kiev respects Bucharest’s right to ensure its own security, but as a neighboring country cannot ignore the future deployment of missile shield elements. Kulyk added that Ukraine is carefully analysing the consequences of Romania’s decision to host elements of the American missile shield. The ambassador also said that in what concerns the shield project, the Ukrainian side relies on palpable consultations and talks with all sides involved. “We have had meetings with the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry, Ministry of Defence and Parliament. In this context I am grateful to the Romanian side for its openness to dialogue, as well as its openness to and understanding of Ukraine’s concerns. We hope that this dialogue will be continued at other levels too, including at the level of experts in this field,” Ambassador Kulyk said.

Asked to what extent Viktor Yanukovych’s recent presidential election victory will determine a change in Ukraine’s policy towards Romania, Kulyk said that developing stable, close ties with Romania is one of Ukraine’s top foreign policy priorities. He added that following the end of election campaigns and of their corresponding organisational processes in Romania and Ukraine, Kiev hopes dialogue at the highest level, intensification of contacts between ministries and institutions and “the activation of bilateral cooperation instruments created both within the Joint Ukrainian-Romanian Presidential Commission and at intergovernmental level” will be resumed.
