Baia Mare mayor has sentence suspended

A Baia Mare Courthouse panel yesterday accepted city mayor Cristian Anghel’s request to suspend his serving of two years and six months prison sentence for a period of 30 days. The court decision is not final.

Baia Mare Courthouse spokesperson Anamaria Miclaus told Mediafax the court had sustained the motion introduced by Anghel, granting him a suspension of the prison term for 30 days rather than 60 as he requested. The source also said the decision was not final, an appeal being possible within ten days. Anghel will be kept in custody until the court makes a final decision. The same source said the mayor had asked to have his sentence suspended in order to resolve outstanding issues at the mayor’s office, the party and in his family.

On Friday, the Baia Mare Court postponed hearing the request made by Anghel until yesterday. Last week, Anghel was arrested at his home, under a court warrant as the mayor was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in a corruption case.
