Chivu applauded on ‘Giuseppe Meazza’

Chivu has returned on the pitch, playing 77 minutes in the game that Inter Milan won against Livorno on Wednesday evening (3-0), after spending two and a half months recovering from the terrible head injury he suffered in the game against Chievo on January 6. The Romanian was replaced at the end of an appreciated performance, and he received standing ovations from all the fans present within the ‘Giuseppe Meazza’ stadium. The fullback took off his protective helmet when leaving the pitch, making his huge scar visible.

“I was not afraid, I was just nervous. Last time I was as nervous as now was during Euro-2000, back when I made my debut for the Romanian national team. Everything went well, my teammates stood by my side, both on and off the pitch. I want to thank them all since these are my first statements after the injury. I don’t want to give names so as to avoid leaving anyone out, I want to thank all the people who stood by my side,” Chivu said. Goal.com website gave Chivu grade 10 for his performance: “He wore a helmet on his comeback but he managed to smile. He returned on the pitch amid fans’ applauses, he was replaced and the whole stadium gave him standing ovations. The Romanian thanked them in kind and left the pitch with tears in his eyes. But the most important thing was to see him back in the game.” The calciomercato.it and eurosport.it websites gave the Romanian fullback grade 7. “He was the evening’s surprise. A perfect comeback,” calciomercato.it wrote. “Chivu wore a protective helmet and he played well. Welcome back,” eurosport.it wrote.
