Vacaroiu undergoes heart surgery

Court of Accounts president Nicolae Vacaroiu underwent heart surgery yesterday at Floreasca Emergency Hospital. He was hospitalized a few days ago, suffering from a coronary artery disease and had to undergo bypass surgical interventions, doctors at the hospital said, quoted by Mediafax. A former prime minister and Senate speaker on behalf of the Social Democrat Party, Vacaroiu, 67, was appointed head of the Court of Accounts in 2008. In a press release yesterday, PSD wished Vacaroiu quick recovery and good health. “All members of the Social Democrat Party voice confidence that the intervention will be carried through successfully by doctor Serban Bradisteanu and his team and the current Court of Accounts president will have the chance to use his experience for the good of the country many years to come,” PSD said in the release.

Vacaroiu served as prime minister in 1992-1996 and in 2004 he was named speaker of the Senate. In 2007, he took on the acting president job for a few weeks when President Traian Basescu was impeached. He resigned from the PSD when he was appointed head of the Court of Accounts.
