Ponta accuses Gov’t of earmarking funds on political criteria

PSD leader Victor Ponta has accused the utter and excessive politicization of the way in which central authorities are financing local authorities, stating that the Government is earmarking funds based on political criteria, favoring the members of PDL and ‘partially those of UDMR.’ According to Mediafax, Ponta stated on Saturday during a press conference in Busteni that during this period the party he leads is fighting a Government whose policy is to destroy local administration. Victor Ponta complained that Romania is witnessing ‘central control’ over local authorities. According to the PSD leader, that control is secured through the earmarking of funds and through judicial means too.

The Social-Democrat President added that the Government is harassing mayors who refuse to join PDL. At the same time, Victor Ponta stated the Constitution has to be amended in what concerns the Prefects’ prerogatives, accusing them of ‘becoming once again some first party secretaries as they were before 1989.’
