Rugby: Romania 48 – Spain 3

Romania’s national rugby team has thoroughly defeated Spain in the last game of the European Nations Cup, score 48-3, and will now start qualifying campaign for the World Cup 2011 (New Zealand). The Oaks had no problems defeating their modest opponents on Saturday. Romania was ahead 27 goals to 3, 40 minutes into the game played on Bucharest’s ‘Arch of Triumph’ stadium. The final score was 48 to 3, with the Oaks scoring tries after tries and not missing any conversion. Ciuntu, Dimofte, Lucaci, Macovei and Fercu were the top try-scorers, while Vlaicu and Dumbrava scored from penalties.

Romania had already secured its presence in qualifications after previously defeating Portugal, score 20-9, and finishing the European Nations Cup on third place. In the qualifiers Romania will play against Lithuania or Ukraine on May 22, with the return leg of the fixture scheduled on June 5. If it wins this fixture Romania will next play against Tunisia at home in a single-leg game. The final two-leg game will pit the Oaks against Uruguay or a team from Asia 2 (Kazakhstan or the Arabian Gulf).
