League I: CFR strengthens top position

CFR Cluj won its away game against an unexpectedly weak FC Brasov, score 1-0. Bud opened the score in the 19th minute, with Mandorlini’s players managing to maintain their lead up to the end by playing cautiously. Brasov had the chance to equalize in the 74th minute after a free kick executed by Cristi Ionescu.

As a consequence of this result CFR strengthens its top position in League I, totaling 46 points. FC Vaslui is second with 44 points, followed by Steaua with 43 points and FC Timisoara, Dinamo and Unirea Urziceni with 42 points.

‘We had to play a very difficult game. We managed to score in the first half. The opponents launched dangerous attacks but we managed to hang on. It’s a well deserved win for our team and we are very happy,’ CFR Cluj head coach Andrea Mandorlini stated for Radio Romania Actualitati. Striker Cristian Bud, scorer of the winning goal said: ‘It was a very, very difficult game. Our team badly needed the three points. Next we will play against Gloria Bistrita and Politehnica Iasi and we hope to win as many points as possible.’

FC Vaslui has moved on second place after winning an extremely important away game against Timisoara, the last game of leg 24, score 1-0. Timisoara launched all-out attacks, missed a penalty (Goga, 58th minute), shook the post (Parks, 81st minute) but was unable to score. Marius Lacatus’s players won the game thanks to the 12th minute goal scored by Costly at the end of a controversial piece in which the striker seems to have played the ball with his hand. FC Vaslui played one man down after Pavlovic saw the red card in the 36th minute.

Timisoara head coach Ioan Ovidiu Sabau took full responsibility for the defeat: ‘It is a painful defeat but the championship is not over, there are games still left to be played. The players are not to blame. I am the main culprit. I assume responsibility for this defeat. We have to find solutions for our next game. We had chances to score, we should have scored. Why blame the referees now?’
