Pogea Jr., luckier than Syda

While Elena Basescu’s boyfriend, Bogdan Ionescu, has quit being an expert at the Romanian Embassy in Paris, two other officials’ children appear to be luckier, ‘Jurnalul National’ reported yesterday. Sources quoted by the daily said Ioan Alexandru Pogea, the son of former Finance Minister Gheorghe Pogea, is one of Romania’s “smart guys”, acting as the country’s link to Brussels on energy matters, with energy being one of the national economy sectors in the deepest trouble. From the official webpage of the Romanian representation to the EU, we learn that Mr. Ioan Alexandru Pogea is an attaché on energy affairs. In charge with the local energy sector is Economy Minister Adriean Videanu who used to be the boss of the energy expert’s father in Titan Mar company.

Oana Balan is another lucky young person. She is the daughter of Economy Ministry Secretary of State for Trade Maria Parcalabescu. According to ‘Jurnalul National’, the press has reported that, similarly to Syda, the young lady was appointed commercial attaché to Montevideo, Uruguay, where she will contribute to the growth of bilateral trade. Balan commenced her fulminant ascension last year as an adviser to her mother’s co-worker, Economy State Secretary Gheorghe Marin. It so happened that the Uruguay office was looking for an economic third secretary and Balan was declared successful in the competition organized for filling the position. In her financial disclosure statement, Balan’s mother says she had lent EUR 300,000 to her daughter.

Ionescu alias Syda on Saturday resigned as assisting expert at the Directorate General for Foreign Relations of the Ministry of Economy after media reports said he was going to end up working for the Romanian Embassy in Paris for an average salary of EUR 2,000. In an official release, the ministry states the results as well as the competition notice can be viewed on its website. The problem is there is no trace of any of these on the website, nor is there any detail on the competitions in which Pogea and Balan were declared successful. What can be found is a vacancy notice for a position with the ‘Africa and the Middle East Directorate’.
