Weightlifting: Ninel Miculescu, triple European Champion in Minsk

Weightlifter Ninel Miculescu won on Wednesday three Gold medals in the snatch event (153 kilograms), the clean and jerk event (180 kilograms) and the overall standings (333 kilograms) of the 69-kilogram category at the European Weightlifting Championships in Minsk. In the snatch event Ninel Miculescu lifted 147 kilograms on his first try, topping the standings. He was then dethroned at first by Russia’s Mihail Gobeev who lifted 148 kilograms then by Turkey’s Mete Binay who lifted 149 kilograms. Nevertheless, on his second try Niculescu lifted 150 kilograms, returning on first place. Binay failed to lift 151 kilograms on his last try while the Romanian lifted 153 kilograms, thus securing the Gold medal.

In the clean and jerk event Ninel Miculescu lifted 170 kilograms on his first try. Russia’s Gobeev lifted 171 kilograms. Miculescu then lifted 175 kilograms but the Russian responded by lifting 178 kilograms. On his third and final try the Romanian lifted 180 kilograms while the Russian failed his last try. The two results also brought the Romanian weightlifter the Gold medal in the overall standings (333 kilograms), the only one that gives him Olympic points.

On Tuesday Antoniu Buci won two medals, the Gold medal in the snatch event (165 kilograms) and the Silver medal in the overall standings (300 kilograms) of the 62-kilogram category. Florin Veliciu finished on 7th place in the overall standings (276 kilograms).

On Day 1 Gabriel Olaru lifted only 100 kilograms in the snatch even of the 56-kilogram category. 227 athletes from 32 countries are taking part in the European Championships in Minsk. Romania is also represented by Roxana Cocos in the 63-kilogram category. The Romanian delegation has attained its goal (that of winning four medals of which two in the overall standings) after only three days.
