Trade deficit down 35 pc in first 2 months

Trade deficit was down 35 per cent from RON 4.25 bln in the first two months of the year, with export being up 18.5 per cent and import down 3.4 per cent compared to the period of reference in 2009, National Statistical Institute (INS) says according to Mediafax. In nominal terms, the RON 20.19 bln worth of export was exceeded by import – RON 24.45 bln – as regards value in the first two months this year. The majority of export and import was with EU member states. The value of intra-community trade of goods was of RON 15.17 bln (EUR 3.67 bln) – dispatches and of RON 17.32 bln (EUR 4.19 bln) – entries, representing 75.1 per cent of the total export and 70.9 per cent of the total import. Important weights in the import and export structure were held by the following groups of goods: machines and transport equipment (42.9 per cent export and 34.5 per cent import) and other manufactured goods (35.4 per cent export and 30.1 per cent import). In different developments, motor-vehicle and motorbike trade grew in February compared to January both as gross series and as working days/seasonally adjusted series by 3.5 per cent or 0.7 per cent. However, indicators are smaller by 22.4 per cent and 22.2 per cent, respectively, than those registered in February 2009.

The increase in turnover as gross series was sustained by trade with motorbikes, parts and accessories, motorbike maintenance and servicing (+48.6 per cent), motor-vehicle maintenance and servicing (+10.6 per cent) and motor-vehicle trade (+5.9 per cent), INS says. On the other hand, construction works volume was down 19.5 per cent as gross series and 18.3 per cent as adjusted series year-on-year in the first two months. A decrease was reported with overhauling (37.8 per cent) and new construction (32.5 per cent), according to INS.
