Senators’ proposal to close hypermarkets on Sundays appears doomed, with Mediafax quoting Agriculture State Secretary Adrian Radulescu as saying yesterday that both producers and retailers reject it. “I met with them, and neither agricultural producers, nor commercial chain representatives want the stores closed on Sundays,” Radulescu said, adding that agricultural producers who sell their products in super and hypermarkets would stand to loose from the proposal. “Nobody would want the stores closed. Mr. Valeriu Steriu alone (the proponent), who’s a politician, wants it,” Radulescu added. Steriu has recently said he was trying to introduce an amendment to the Code of good practices, following the example of EU members Germany and Austria, on large chain stores to be closed on Sundays.
