Mikhail Gorbachev, in Bucharest

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev arrives in Bucharest today, as honourary guest at the launch of a new daily newspaper named ‘Puterea’ (The Power), at the Diplomatic Club of Bucharest, this evening. Prior to the event, Gorbachev will have, around noon, a private meeting with 22 people, including former Romanian presidents Ion Iliescu and Emil Constantinescu, ministers, ambassadors and representatives of the most important multinationals in the country. According to Mediafax, he will also meet PM Emil Boc, but this had not been officially confirmed until yesterday afternoon. Gorbachev was also due in Bucharest last December, for an event organised by Realitatea TV, but he canceled his trip at the last minute, because of health problems.

New daily ‘Puterea’ will have 16 pages and an average circulation of 25,000 copies. According to Alecu Racoviceanu, a member of the newspaper’s steering board, media investigations will be one of the newspaper’s strong points. Racoviceanu and the other two board members, Lidia Mitchevici and Val Valcu, led until January 2010 daily ‘Gardianul,’ which succumbed to financial trouble.
