The Vinci-Aktor consortium that won the bid for building the Comarnic-Brasov motorway in concession droped the contract, as it does not avail of the necessary funds. The project is worth a total EUR 1.5 bln. “They (the winning consortium) came last week to tell us they have big problems to secure the financing. If they decide to give up, we’ll make an analysis to find out whether we must change anything in the project, if we still want to do it in concession and the moment this will happen. We cannot repeat the bid, as we risk going up against the same problems: there is no money in the international market,” sources with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure declared for Mediafax yesterday. Transport Minister Radu Berceanu, the chairman of French group Vinci and an official of Greek company Aktor signed on January 18 the concession contract for the project, which is due for completion in January 2014. On that occasion, Minister Berceanu announced that the European Investment Bank (EIB) is interested to co-finance the project. EIB vice-president Mathias Kollatz-Ahnen however said in March that the institution has not started yet the negotiations for financing the motorway segment and warned that such projects are difficult to finance in the present economic climate.
