New US Embassy building nearing completion

US Ambassador to Romania Mark Gitenstein yesterday poured the last shovelful of concrete at the foundation of the new US Embassy building, leaving his fingerprint alongside that of Cosmin Onisii, the director of the Romanian Foreign Ministry’s US and Canada bureau. “This project was built with Romanian materials and by Romanian workers. Up to now 600,000 work hours have been invested here, with no labor accidents taking place. 130 years ago the US established diplomatic ties with Romania. That very year, Louis Bralower, my great grandfather emigrated from Botosani to the United States. I am not familiar with the conditions that made him leave Botosani but I imagine that that penniless man saw in his mind that grandiose statue located in New York harbor: ‘Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free’,” the US ambassador said. He confessed that he wants the new building to become a symbol of the changes that took place in the 130 years of bilateral friendship.

Located in northern Bucharest, close to Tunari forest, the new headquarters of the US Embassy spreads on a surface of 40,000 square metres in an area that includes both commercial and residential spaces. The building is 18 metres tall and has a surface of 10,000 square metres. Its construction will be finalised next summer.
