Workers on medical leave will receive a house call by two representatives of the authorities, accompanied by a police officer. Employees who abuse sick leave and who demand it for no solid reason will be punished. Sick leave entitlement has also been cut from 45 to 30 days. The decision was made by the government on Wednesday, hoping to reduce health budget allocations used for medical leave settlement and also to limit abuse. Health Minister Attila Cseke said the total medical leave cost in 2009 went over RON 900 M, or six per cent of the health sector’s budget. At the end of March, PM Emil Boc had urged a strict medical leave entitlement regime. At the time, he offered the example of the State Asset Resolution Authority (AVAS) where more than 100 workers had gone on sick leave just to evade pay cuts.
