Voicu remains in custody

Senator Catalin Voicu has no more appeal chances to the High Court decision of keeping him on 30 day remand, Mediafax says. On Friday the nine judge panel of the High Court has rejected the senator’s appeal to release, on a definitive ruling. Another appeal to a High Court panel was rejected last Monday. “The facts are serious enough, especially related to the fact that we are referring to a Romanian senator,” Judge Livia Zglimbea was explaining then. Also, the Friday court decision was explained by “fear the Senator would attempt to modify facts and proofs leading to solution of his case, which makes it clear he should remain in custody.”

Also on Friday, the Senator was moved from a Jilava Penitentiary medical unit to Police Arrest, after he had been admitted to hospital on several health claims. According to a release from Jilava medical unit representatives, the health condition of Senator Voicu is stable, although he is under stress medication, due to his current legal condition.

“I am indeed under treatment, “ Voicu confirmed, denying rumours about sickness. “I take medication because of the constant media and public pressure of late,” he explained.

Senator Voicu was arrested March 30 for several counts of corruption. Judge Florin Costiniu and businessmen Marius Locic and Costel Casuneanu were arrested late Friday night into early Saturday morning in connection to the same case. The three were released Monday night, after a nine-judge High Court panel admitted their appeal against the arrest ruling.

According to law provisions, the medical team where a convict is admitted has to decide if the person’s condition is good enough for him to be sent in custody.

Immediately after being released from custody, businessman Casuneanu went to the Transportation minister, Gandul daily was writing during the weekend. In an online chat yesterday, Transportation Minister Radu Berceanu was defending himself saying “Casuneanu did not come to talk to me.”

According to Berceanu, Casuneanu was following business matters with the National Road and Highway Company, with which he is developing several million dollar projects.
