New hearings in Voicu case

National Anti-Corruption Department (DNA) prosecutors interviewed Senator Catalin Voicu’s alleged godson Radu Dan Floarea for over three hours yesterday. When leaving the building he did not tell the press what he had discussed with prosecutors, only specifying that he had been interviewed as a witness in Voicu’s case. Asked if he still owed money to Voicu, Floarea said he had paid up all his debts, but he did not indicate the sums or the recipients.

But legal sources quoted by Mediafax said Floarea’s statement to prosecutors shows that he borrowed over EUR 500,000 from Voicu and only paid back about EUR 200,000. According to the same sources, Floarea transferred the remaining EUR 300,000 debt to an associate and told investigators that as far as he was aware, his associate failed to return the money to Voicu, as agreed.

Also yesterday, defence lawyers for ex judge Florin Costiniu and businessmen Marius Locic and Costel Casuneanu came to DNA, awaiting several interviews scheduled in the case where the three and Senator Voicu are under investigation on corruption charges. Legal sources say DNA prosecutors had also summoned the police officers Voicu had allegedly tried to convince to help with a case in which they were investigating businessman Locic. Senator Voicu was arrested on several corruption charges on March 30. On the night of April 9, Costiniu as well as businessmen Locic and Casuneanu were remanded in custody for an initial period of 29 days in the same case. They were, however, released by the nine judges of the High Court who granted the appeal filed against the remand measure on April 12.
