Businessmen back the adoption of EUR in 2015

The Romanian Businessmen Association (AOAR) backs the adoption of EUR on January 1, 2015, as per the timetable agreed, HotNews informs. The normal functioning and growth of the Romanian economy depends on that, Florin Pogonaru, president of AOAR, stated during a press conference.

‘The business environment backs the adoption of the EUR both in order to ensure more equitable conditions in relation to European competitors and as a guarantee of limiting the adoption of populist measures in the following years, measures that could cause serious macroeconomic side-slipping that could delay or significantly affect the Romanian companies’ competitiveness on the European market,’ Pogonaru said. The advantages of adopting the EUR and of sticking to the current timetable consist of eliminating the influence of foreign currency risks, with a positive effect in what concerns sustainable economic development, of eliminating speculative pressures against the RON, of the need to perform structural reforms and a real correlation between monetary and fiscal policies. On the other hand, the main risk is that the productivity of the Romanian economy would stand below the European average when adopting the EUR. At the same time, the businessmen expressed their concern with the fact that the discourse of politicians and of the BNR Governor changed after Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the IMF, visited Romania and stated that it would be good to postpone the adoption of the EUR by 1-2 years.
