Oltchim to play CL final return leg in Bucharest

Olchim Ramnicu Valcea will play the Champions League return leg final in Bucharest’s Polivalenta Hall, as decided by the draws that took place on Tuesday within the EHF headquarters. The team coached by Radu Voina will play against title holder Viborg HK, a team for which Cristina Varzaru, the skipper of the Romanian women’s national handball team, plays. The first leg will be played in Denmark. Oltchim is the first Romanian team to play in the Champions League final after 1990. The Romanian title holder’s sports record also includes the Cup Winners’ Cup (2007), the Champions’ Trophy (2007), and two IHF Cups (1984 and 1989). The final is scheduled on May 8-9 (first leg) and May 15-16 (return leg). Radu Voina’s goal this season was to qualify for the Champions League final. Denmark’s Viborg HK reached the final five times and won it twice (2006 and 2009).

Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea qualified on Sunday for the final after defeating Hungary’s Gyor ETO in the return leg of the semifinals, score 24-20 (11-10 at half time). Oltchim head coach Radu Voina stated on Tuesday for Mediafax that for his players it will be important to play the return leg in Bucharest although in his opinion at this level the order of the games is less important. ‘I don’t know whether at this level what matters first of all is where the return leg will be played but nevertheless it seems that playing the final leg at home in front of your own fans is something else,’ Voina stated.
