Most schools across the country will be closed today as teachers will stage a one-day general strike, discontent with the new education law, law incomes and planned layoffs. Members of the country’s major education union confederations will join the strike today and are ready to indefinitely stop working at the end of May if their demands are not met.
The protest is also joined by university students all over the country. Students in Cluj have already announced that they would not attend classes today. All education units, except special schools and boarding schools, will be closed in Suceava today, while in Sibiu, over 85 per cent of schools will join the strike. In Bistrita Nasaud, over 80 per cent of teachers will not work, according to Mediafax news agency.
Education unionists decided to go ahead with the strike after Tuesday negotiations with Education Minister Daniel Funeriu failed to produce any results. The stoppage will affect national high school graduation exams, as a computer skill test was scheduled for today.
