League I: Steaua vs. FC Timisoara, egos’ clash

Steaua Bucharest, the last team that can imperil CFR Cluj’s championship supremacy, will play at home against FC Timisoara on Sunday in what will be a fiery derby.

Ahead of the game, Timisoara financier Marian Iancu took the tension to fever pitch with his statement about the re-opening of the ‘Cash Bag’ case in which Steaua owner Gigi Becali is accused of bribery. ‘We have filed an official request to have the case reopened. We have an indictment in Steaua’s case too but it is suspended by the Romanian Football Federation. Today we have filed a request within the Professional Football League in order to have the case reopened,’ Marian Iancu stated for Sport.ro. On May 7, 2008, the National Anti-corruption Office (DNA) detained five persons that had EUR 1.7 M on them, with the money belonging to Gigi Becali. The money were allegedly destined for the players of U Cluj in case they managed to finish their final leg game against CFR in a tie, a result that would have favored Steaua in its race for the title. After that row the Disciplinary Commission of the Romanian Football Federation ruled several sanctions against Steaua but the Court of Arbitration for Football canceled them.
