Labour minister: We will not cut social security

Credit officers are working on evaluations of the cuts that can be made in each sector, Minister of Labour Mihai Seitan said, quoted by HotNews.ro. Seitan claims that these evaluations will be completed in two to three weeks. The minister also said all types of social security in Romania will be re-analysed. The purpose of this analysis has remained, as yet, unidentified, especially as authorities do not consider cutting them. Seitan denied the government’s intention to cut them, despite several comments made both by Prime Minister Emil Boc and President Traian Basescu that there are too many socially assisted people, which encourages “dodging work”. Seitan says that, within the Ministry of Labour, there are 34 social aids. The rest are paid by local authorities.

“By our estimates, at the moment there are around 200 different types of social security. Besides the 34 types of social aid paid by the Labour Ministry in 2009, there is a wide range of other instruments of social intervention managed by other ministries, and many of them are within the scope of local administration,” government adviser Andreea Paul Vass said.
