League 1: CFR loses steam

CFR Cluj, in the top spot of League 1, ‘managed’ to give their opponents a chance to the title, having surprisingly lost in Ploiesti against Astra over the weekend. Four legs before the end of the season, Unirea Urziceni is but three points behind Mandorlini’s players, although the direct encounters don’t work to the second-ranked’ advantage, while FC Timisoara and FC Vaslui are four points behind the leader. In the next leg, CFR takes on FC Vaslui, and FC Timisoara plays away against Dinamo.

One thing is almost sure, the title will stay away from Bucharest this year, as Steaua is six points away from the top team, Dinamo, 10, and Rapid, 15 respectively. The champion medals could go to Cluj, Urziceni, Vaslui or Timisoara instead. Rapid gets away from the European cups zone, having drawn home 2-2 against Dinamo. Four goals, two players sent out of the pitch, a great deal of nerve-racking and some huge misses is an apt roundup of the game. The home team came back from two points down to manage no more than an equalizer, despite having one player more onto the field for more than half of the time, as Dinamo’s Pulhac earned a red card on 42 minutes.

While Dinamo coach Cornel Talnar sees his team qualified in the Europa League already, he was unhappy about his goalies. ‘I’m getting crazy, I’m at the end of my tether, I even asked Curca (the goalkeeper) at the recess how many points we should score, 4-5, in order to win a game, since all those mistakes are quite frustrating. I hope there would be some peace after this match, though there is never peace at Dinamo. Even when we are on a winning streak, rumours are still going round,’ Talnar said after the match.

There are still four rounds to go, but we’ve already have six points more than Rapid, actually’ Talnar also said. Dinamo is five points ahead of Rapid and has scored better in the direct-encounter department as well. Dinamo’s coach appeared worried about four of his players being unfit to play in the next game against FC Timisoara, leg 31st. ‘We have four players unable to play, all four defenders, and thinking there is no player available to send onto the field will deprive me of tonight’s sleep,’ Talnar confessed.
