According to a Government decision published on Monday evening in the Official Gazette, in Q2 of 2010 the Ministry of Defence will receive RON 61.521 M for boosting the Romanian presence in Afghanistan. The decision was taken by the Government last week and stipulates that the money will come from the budget reserve fund that is at the Government’s disposal. The sum will cover expenditures on personnel (RON 10.92 M), on goods and services (RON 12.36 M), on social assistance (RON 55,000) and on non-financial assets (RON 38.186 M). The money will be used for training and equipping the extra troops, as well as for reconfiguring the Romanian contingent deployed in the Afghan theatre of operations in 2010. According to the Government Decision, the sum needed for the whole reconfiguration of troops surpasses RON 210 M, with the difference set to be earmarked in Q3 and Q4 from the reserve fund or through a budget rectification. The law also adds that the acquisition of equipment and goods needed for hiking the number of Romanian troops in Afghanistan will urgently take place.
Romania currently has 1,125 troops in Afghanistan, of which 1,089 are part of ISAF under NATO aegis and 36 are part of the coalition led by the United States.
