Poll: Bucharesters in favour of having sick dogs euthanised

An opinion poll conducted by the eResearch company and issued on Monday shows that of the proposals put forth by the Bucharest Prefect the Bucharesters agree with euthanising sick stray dogs (71 per cent of respondents) and aggressive stray dogs (66 per cent) but disagree with fining the persons that feed stray dogs (63 per cent). At the same time, 67 per cent of the respondents oppose euthanising the stray dogs that are not adopted in 7 days’ time. The quantitative poll shows that 78 per cent of the respondents accept at least one of the proposals made by Prefect Mihai Atanaoaei. Likewise, most of the persons (75 per cent) that back the measures proposed by the City Hall were the victims of stray dogs. Of the measures proposed in the draft law, euthanising the stray dogs that are not adopted in 7 days’ time is the most opposed: 67 per cent of the respondents are against it. Fining the persons that feed stray dogs is not something Bucharesters want either, with 63 per cent of the respondents expressing their disagreement with it. Two thirds of the respondents state that they have been attacked by stray dogs at least once. According to the survey, the most often attacks consisted of: ‘I was barked at,’ ‘they tried to bite me,’ ‘I was cornered,’ ‘I was chased’ and finally ‘I was bitten.’

The respondents also expressed their opinions, proposing measures for solving the stray dogs issue in Bucharest. Thus, 72 per cent of them want fines against those that remove dogs from shelters and then release them on the streets. Another measure mentioned is having the stray dogs neutered (70 per cent of the respondents).
