A 15-year-old female teenager died in the Gynaecology Department of the Constanta County Emergency Hospital Tuesday night, four hours after she underwent an abortion. Early investigation results show the girl suffered a hemorrhagic shock and uterus rupture. The County Coroner’s certificate states the girl was 5-to-6-month pregnant, and not 14-week pregnant as doctors thought upon her admission to hospital. A forensic examination has been performed at the ‘Mina Minovici’ Institute of Legal Medicine in Bucharest to establish whether the doctor who operated on the girl was at fault. According to the Constanta County Hospital Spokesman, Dr. Florian Stoian, the hospital decided to terminate the work contract with Gynaecologist Riad Hani, who performed the surgery on the girl. The hospital also opened an internal investigation into the case. Also notified were the malpractice commissions with the Constanta Department of Public Health and the Doctors’ College. Constanta Police too launched an own investigation into the case, the more so as abortions are banned if the pregnancy is beyond 12 week-old. The Constanta County Police Spokesman, Inspector Radu Croitoru, said the probe is aimed at a manslaughter charge. The teenager, a Muslim, was buried a few hours after she died.
