Press: Geoana charged with mediating Schutz-Voicu meeting by text message

The name of the Social-Democratic Party (PSD)’s former president Mircea Geoana, crops up again in the Voicu case. According to some phone recordings, annexed to a case investigated by the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) Oradea, in 2006, which “Romania libera” journalists came across, Maria (Lili) Schutz, vice-president of the PSD Dolj organization, asked Geoana for help, on his Senate phone, while she was investigated by anti-corruption prosecutors for committing three fraud-related crimes, which brought the Romanian state damages worth about EUR 5 M. The object of the investigation was, namely, Schutz’s claiming and running the contracts for the privatisation of Sere Codlea and Orser Oradea from the Agency of State Domains.

Thus, on September 6, 2006, Maria Schutz announced Mircea Geoana, by text message; she was summoned by the DNA. Geoana, the head of PSD’s Dolj branch at the time, replied by inviting Schutz to Bucharest and, the next day, called her to say: “Please write down a phone number … Just a second, to get it out of the phonebook… General Voicu Catalin. (…) Call him now, meet him and he’ll help you with anything you need”.

Geoana was called to testify on Monday by the anti-corruption prosecutors in the Voicu investigation. Both he and Maria Schutz had denied on several occasions, so far, that the Schutz-Voicu meeting had been mediated by Geoana.
