League I: Unirea Alba Iulia, first team to be demoted

With two legs to go before the end of the season, the fight for the title and for the places that secure a qualification for Europa League remains open to any result. The only certainty after the games played yesterday and on Sunday is that Unirea Alba Iulia will play in League II next season. Yesterday, Unirea lost its home-side game against Dinamo (1-2), with the result seemingly confirming Dinamo’s qualification for the Europa League despite the ambitions harboured by Otelul Galati, which had obtained an encouraging away win against Astra Ploiesti on Sunday. Alba Iulia took the lead in its game against Dinamo and dominated the hostilities in the first half but physically collapsed in the second. Dinamo did not show much in the offence but equalized in stoppage time (Andrei Cristea scored from a penalty kick awarded after Vujadinovic played the ball with his hand). Andrei Cristea (photo) sealed the game in the 69th minute after receiving a superb pass from Bostina.

Astra Ploiesti has fallen close the relegation area after losing its home-side game against Otelul Galati (0-3) on Sunday evening. Astra is now only four points ahead of the first place that ensures a ticket for League II. The goals were scored by Giurgiu (44th minute), Costin (59th minute) and Antal (85th minute). Thanks to this result Dorinel Munteanu’s team is now only two points behind Dinamo and has an extra game to play. International Curtea de Arges defeated Ceahlaul (2-0), the latter being 90 per cent sure of a place in League II.

The fight for the title continues to rage between CFR Cluj, FC Timisoara, Unirea Urziceni and FC Vaslui. FC Vaslui and Steaua Bucharest clashed in the leg’s derby last evening after the closing of this edition. It was a clash of egos considering that Marius Lacatus, head coach of FC Vaslui, was Steaua’s glory in the 1990s. In another game yesterday evening League leader CFR Cluj wins against Universitatea Craiova, final score 3-2. The last games of this leg are scheduled today: Poli Iasi vs. Brasov and Gloria Bistrita vs. Unirea Urziceni.
