Men smoke twice as much as women

Men smoke twice as much as women, with one third of Romanian men being smokers, but the women are much more dependent, finds a Eurobarometer Report released by the European Commission. According to the survey, more than one in three Romanian men (37.6 pc) is smoking, against just 12.5 of women. On the other hand, medical experts warn that women are more tobacco dependent than men. “It has been demonstrated that the incidence of smoking is higher among men, and Romania is no exception. Women, however, find it harder to quit this habit, usually because of emotional reasons. Young women, especially, are the most affected by this vice.

Expert help by a medic is a must, in order to quit smoking,” said Dumitru Mihaltan, president of the Romanian Pneumology Society and of the Smoking Prevention Network of Romania. Furthermore, studies conducted over the last 20 years show women are more vulnerable to cancer and respiratory diseases than male smokers.

Also according to the Eurobarometer Report, death from smoking can be avoided if effective measures are taken in time.
