Basescu blasts clientele-based state, assures Romania is not in the same situation as Greece

President assured Romanians last night that the country is not in the same situation as Greece and the current difficulties may be overcome. He told a press conference that Romania might get into the same problems as Greece, but stressed that the country has ‘all the necessary instruments to avoid’ the same outcome. The only question, he said, is if ‘we are willing and capable to use them.’

Basescu said Romania counts on the solidarity of the European and international financial institutions. The head of state did not back down on cutting pensions, at least until the year end. In a surprising move, he admitted that the entire political class has developed a ‘clientele-based state’, in parallel with the development of the democratic institutions.
