Liberals, SocialDems clash over alternative rescue measures

Opposition seems to be far from a consensus on needed crisis resolution measures.

PNL President Crin Antonescu on Friday told a press conference his party opposed alternative economic measures proposed by PSD, which he called ‘demagogical’, ‘anachronic’, ‘electoral’ and ‘ineffective’. In the current crisis, Romania is being equally under the threat of what the power has come up with and of this anachronic leftist and completely ineffective approach. The way I see it, it is an electoralist option, a way by which PSD is trying to electorally tap into the discontent of so many Romanians these days – and this is something I, as a politician, can understand -, but, as far as we are concerned, it fails to provide an answer to the big question in Romania today: How can we produce more, how can we make real economy grow so that we can get out of crisis?’ PNL leader further said. Asked to comment on these allegations, Ponta said the he understood Antonescu had said PSD’s suggested measures were ‘purely leftist’ ones. ‘No, they are purely leftist measures, I heard him say it and I believe Mr Antonescu has remained consistent in his opinions from that point of view: yes, our solutions are leftist ones, just as PNL’s solutions have always been rightist ones, from 2005 through to 2008 when they had the power and now, as we have become used to. PNL’s opposing our leftist measures indicates consistency. Where Mr Antonescu becomes inconsistent – an I can understand the difficult position he is in – is that the liberal rightist measures are the measures of PDL and of Traian Basescu’s, which makes it rather difficult for him to find fault with Basescu’s solutions that are identical to his own. I wouldn’t like to be in his position, which makes me content with my position as a left-wing party. /…/ I resented it when the PNL government had all of a sudden turned into a leftist government in 2007-2008, when it kept producing leftist measures; I believe it is now reclaiming its correct place,’ Ponta further stated.
